Trudon's history

In 1643, Claude Trudon became the owner of a shop on rue Saint-Honoré where he sold spices and candles. Here he developed both as a businessman and as a candle maker. The candles he made were purchased to illuminate churches and homes.

Claude Trudon set out to create a business that would make his family wealthy.
He used beeswax to make the candles. Since the bees were such an important factor, the motto became

“Deo regique laborant”, “They work for God and the king”.

He is of course referring to the bees.
The wax was carefully harvested from the hive – then filtered, cleaned and exposed to sunlight – all to produce the purest and whitest wax possible. "The Sun King Louis XIV, his court and the largest congregations were seduced by the white candles. In addition to the pure color, they burned for a long time without cracking.

Now, royal court supplier - the only candles to ever be given this title.

In 1737, descendant Jèrome Trudon bought the Royale des Cires (Royal Wax Manufacturer) factory. With all the accumulated expertise in candle making, Jèrome Trudon has excelled.

The factory continued to supply Versailles until the last day of the old regime and survived the French Revolution. When Napoleon I was crowned in 1811, the factory supplied the Emperor's court. The Emperor gave his son only one gift on the day he was born, a Trudon pillar candle decorated with three gold coins depicting Napoleon's profile, the Imperial pillar candle.

No political or industrial revolution has ever damaged Trudon's existence, they even survived the miracle of electricity. In 1889 the factory received a gold medal at the French World's Fair.

In 2007, Trudon became a specialist in the production of scented candles. Today, renowned “noses” are recruited to create perfumes to accompany the stories told. Each candle is still filled and made by hand, preserving the knowledge of founder Claude Trudon.

The first Trudon store opened in the early 2000s in the Saint Germain-des-Près neighborhood, near the Saint Sulpice church. Surrounded by a number of religious shops, it continues to offer a wide range of scented and decorative candles. In 2014, Trudon opened a store on rue Saint Croix-de-la-Breonnerie in the Marais, a historic and typical Parisian area. Today, Trudon candles shine all over the world.
